The Environmental Working Group recently came out with their 2010 Sunscreen Guide.
According to their research, avoid sunscreens containing:
- Oxybenzone
- Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A)
- Added insect repellant
- Sprays or Powders
- SPF over 50 plus
- Zinc
- Titanium Dioxide
- Creams
- Broad spectrum protection (UVA and UVB)
- SPF 30 plus for beach and pool
It will be very interesting to see how the 2011 report may have changed from this one. There has been an increasing amount of attention paid to sunscreens in the last couple of years and I am sure the focus paid by organisations such as EWG have helped enormously here. The research done into many alternative sunscreens to the many toxic ones being used today is hugely encouraging. I just wish there weren't so many data gaps in EWG's database but I guess that is what happens when you aren't a profit making organisation.

Vitamin D can only be synthesized via a photochemical process so early vertebrates that ventured onto land either had to ingest foods that contained vitamin D or had to be exposed to sunlight to photosynthesize vitamin D in their skin to satisfy their body's vitamin D requirement.
